Episode in Focus: First Date/Release
It's time for two shiny new Episodes in Focus. Next week we are looking at First Date and Release. Where First takes on some unpleasant new meanings, and the evil just keeps on coming to LA - plus we get a nice pair of takes on the power of Incorporeal Evil to... um, get stuff done. It all depends on your leverage, apparently. So from Monday your time, get sharing whatever you have to share on these highly-contrasting new Episodes in Focus.

Episode in Focus: First Date
A good week for finding out new stuff. Buffy gets a little closer to Robin Wood, and starts to fathom out what he might be doing Principalling on the Hellmouth. Xander has a date with a gorgeous girl who… dammit, demonstrates his demon dating days are not all done. Spike and Anya totally rise above the awkward ex thing. And a Potential turns out to have a little personality: meet Chao-Ahn. (Who is lactose intolerant and very uncomfortable.) Giles's international Slayer-training flashcards may need some work.

Meantime, the First has a crack at cracking Andrew, the weak link hostage in the heart of Casa Summers. And we find out that Robin Wood has a very, very particular interest in one of the gang.

XANDER
(comes in through the front door, giddy) Guys, guess what happened.
WILLOW
Buffy got a date!
XANDER
(excited) No, I did. (looks at Buffy, frowning) Fine. Way to steal my thunder.
BUFFY
Sorry. If it makes you feel better, it's Principal Wood, and I think he's aligned with the First.
XANDER
Also, like ten years older than you, right?
WILLOW
(teasing) Which is like 100 years younger than your type!
BUFFY
Yay. Someone who doesn't remember the Industrial Revolution.
WILLOW
I think they're gonna end up making out. (mocking, holds a pair of socks to her chest lovingly) "Oh, Principal Wood," she'll gasp, "I love your lack of wicked energy."
BUFFY
(throws a pair of socks at Willow) Watch it, or I'm gonna make you talk about your new girlfriend who you hold hands with under the dinner table and think we don't notice.
WILLOW
How 'bout yours, Xander. Is she evil?
XANDER
Well, she's interested in me, so there's a good chance, but I'm hoping for the best. We're going for coffee.

Episode in Focus: Release
The Beast is dead. Long live the Beastmaster. Aka out of the frying pan and into the big world-burning fire. Angelus is still on the loose, Slayer Faith is not quite getting it done yet, and Team Angel are under a whole lot of stress and fear. Wes and Faith, especially, are going dark dark dark as fast as we can watch. Meantime, we viewers also watch Cordelia and Connor tending their baby and (in Cordy's case) having long distance convos by glowing crystal, knowing a whole lot that the characters don't.

Key quote:
BEASTMASTER (O.S.)
Do you think me blind, little man? That I don't see every move before you decide to make it? Dare to seek me out again, and your insolence will be punished ten-fold.
ANGELUS
Yeah, what're you gonna do, huh? Give me a migraine? (chuckles) You ethereal types with your big, swinging omniscience. When push comes to shove, though, you gotta send some overgrown slag-heap to do your dirty work. Ooh, that's real spooky. (looks at the empty floor where the shopkeeper was) Oh, that's great! You made me lose my shopkeeper.
BEASTMASTER (O.S.)
This isn't the way, my sweet. We should be friends, you and I.
ANGELUS
No, and I'll tell you why. One, because, you know, I'm evil, so—the friends thing—that's out. And two, if I did have any friends, they sure as hell wouldn't be living inside my head.
BEASTMASTER (O.S.)
Like you're forced to live inside Angel's? (chuckles) Because you're the voice in there, aren't you? Just beneath the surface, buried under all that goodness, fully conscious, fully aware, but trapped. Unable to move or speak, powerless to act on your desires. So thirsty, so helpless...it must be agony.
ANGELUS
I'm getting real bored with this game. (walks away)
BEASTMASTER (O.S.)
Then how 'bout a round of show-and-tell? Soul, soul, who has your soul? (the jar containing Angel's soul appears on a table in front of Angelus) Oh, right. Me.
