Out of Egypt

Buffy left Robin lying on the floor of his vampire-proof garage A trap! A trap for Spike, still so angry she was shaking. “Tried to kill Spike – he tried to kill Spike – and Giles helped him!” She felt sick to her stomach with the knowledge that her former watcher had participated in the attempt to leave her to face the First without her strongest warrior and without the man he insisted she loved. Like that was going to make her a better fighter! Had he forgotten that grief-stricken Buffy tended to go catatonic if the calamities piled up too high? It gradually crept into her consciousness that she was more upset at the thought of losing Spike, the man, than at losing another soldier.

Spike stayed away the rest of the night and next day, so she had no chance to talk to him until the following evening. He came by to see if she wanted the potentials to do any more training and found her sitting on the porch steps. As he approached and went to sit down beside her he saw that she was fighting back tears. He flashed back two years to the time he had gone there to kill her and ended up trying to comfort her about her mom’s illness. “Buffy, what’s wrong, love?” He wiped an escaped tear from her cheek with his thumb.

Suddenly his arms were full of a sobbing woman – Slayer-strength arms clinging to him in a way that would have broken bones in a human man.

“He, they... tried... tried to take you away from me,” she said with a small hiccup.

“They? Who, they?”

“Giles,” she spat out. “Giles was in on it. He tried to stall me in the cemetery, tried to keep me away until Robin could k-kill you.” She began crying again, but softly this time, soaking his shirt with her tears. “He tried to tell me it was for my own good. As though taking away the man I love was going to help me fight the First.”

Spike sat frozen in place, wondering if she was even aware of what she'd said. Somehow, even though his cool body was completely still, his entire inside felt suffused with warmth that spread from his unbeating heart all the way to his toes and fingers.

“Shush, love, shush. Stop crying, please. I’m right here, aren’t I? They failed and I doubt they’ll try again now that they know we’ll be watching for it.”

She pulled back and looked up at him, her expression grim. There was nothing soft about her tear-stained face – it was pure Slayer. “They won’t try it again because they know I’ll hurt them,” she said flatly. Wiping her eyes with the palm of her hand, she sniffled a few more times and took a deep, shuddering breath to end the crying. She met his gaze straight on. “I thought I’d lost you."

“Oh, come on, Slayer, you’ve been trying to lose me for years. You know I’m not that easy to get rid of.” He smiled at her and tipped her chin up, happy to see a small quirk to her lips at that very true statement.

“Spike, you know last year – how you tried so hard to convince me I loved you?”

“Yes....” He drew the reply out, not sure where she was going with this line of thought and remembering the last time he'd tried to “show” her.

“Well, turns out you were right. So, I guess you can gloat if you want to. Spike right – Buffy wrong.” She peered up at him from behind her hair to see what his reaction was going to be.

“Right about what, pet?” he teased, tucking her hair behind her ear. “Could you be a little more specific? I’m right about so many things, you know. Music, movies, cars…..” His ramble was cut off by two soft, yet demanding, lips on his. Somewhere during what turned into a very long kiss, Buffy came up for air long enough to say, “I love you, Spike. Is that specific enough for you?”

“It’ll do, Slayer, it’ll do.”

Aw, this is lovely. Nice to see Buffy figuring things out without Spike actually having to die first :D

Thank you, and yes, it so easily could have. Wouldn't have been as dramatic, I suppose.
