Rare Character Recs: Lydia, oh Lydia
You know how I love to hate the Watchers' Council? Well, I just straight-up love Lydia the Watcher! For anybody who has ever been blushy around a research subject, she's very relatable. Fun fact: Her last name is never mentioned on the show or in the credits, yet consensus has it as "Chalmers". Here are a few favorite fics that feature my favorite Gal in Tweed!

Anti-hero Worship by deird1, G
Post-Checkpoint. Drabble

Looking For Trouble by nautibitz, R
Post-Checkpoint. Spike's Number One Fan gets a tumble. Buffy catches them in the act.

(In)Discretion by thatotherperv, NC17
Lydia Chalmers, Watcher, attempts to get some material from the source to “fill in some holes” in her thesis on William the Bloody. Spike is happy to oblige. Also available at Just Rewards here.

In Pursuit of William aka Fieldwork by dutchbuffy2305, NC17
Lydia goes to great lengths to obtain information on her thesis subject. This one spans Checkpoint through an alternate Season 7.
At The Crypt: Chapter 1 / Chapter 2 / Chapter 3 / Chapter 4 (chapters unlinked, alas)
Also available at Tea at the Ford, here.

The Watcher's Diary of Lydia Chalmers
by Alixtii, PG
Part of the author's vast Watcher!verse. Set mostly post-Checkpoint, and then jumps ahead to BtVS S7/AtS S4.

And, lest we forget, here are some links to a very important document:

Lydia Chalmers' Thesis on William the Bloody
The work of a dozen writers, this tour de force is tricky to find. The link above to TatF is fairly easy to navigate, but is not as complete as this one: http://www.scribd.com/doc/16266234/Spike-Thesis
You can also download a PDF version at www.screamingmonkeys.com/spikethesis.pdf.

The very existence of this document is proof positive that our fandom is awesome!

Thank you thank you thank you!
There are two or three ones I didn't know before, and it's always a pleasure to read about the lovely Lydia.

Wanted to add one to these, but as usual I'm clueless as to title or author. It's an older fic, short, has Spike surprising Lydia in her hotel room and seducing her into telling him what they've found out and/or decided about Buffy and what to tell her. It's Spuffy by implication, as his intention is to get information for her, but it's Spike/Lydia in fact as he charms the pants off her (literally). Wish I could remember where I saw it.

It might be the first chapter of the dutchbuffy story, which was probably a stand alone at one time. If not, feel free to add to this list at any time. Really. Moar Lydia!

I suppose that's possible, although it seemed pretty complete. I'll check it out and if not, I'll try to find it.

ETA : No, I don't think so, although, if it isn't, then someone "borrowed" tremendously from someone else. My recollection (always shaky) is that the one I remember was from Spike's pov. I suppose it's possible it wasn't, as this one is so very, very similar (identical) in terms of the seduction. And yet, I would swear I remember some different dialogue, and Spike's thoughts after he left the room. I dunno. I suppose it's possible I read this one (first chapter, at least) and confused it with something else. There are too many similarities - the cheap hotel room, hands sliding up her thighs, etc for it not to be the one I remember reading so long ago...

My life in fanfic: it's always right on the tip of my brain...

LOL Exactly! Although, I went to AAS today thinking that would be the easiest place to find it. But... no Spike/Lydia! Can you believe it? I know I've read the whole Dutch Buffy fic, but now I don't know if I misremembered the first chapter, or if she changed it when she continued it, or if there really is another very similar one out there somewhere, but from Spike's pov. It'll be a mystery, I guess. Lord knows it's not like the title, archive or author are likely to come to me any time soon. :)

The thesis was one of the first works of fanfic I ever read. Was so impressed and laughed so hard. It is just spot on perfect.

I can see why you stuck with it, if that was your start! We are very lucky to have such amazing minds working for us, aren't we?

Thank you, thank you, thank you, for the link to another wonderful Lydia story! Your records — and your brain — are truly magnificent!

I tried to post a reply to your entry at Buffyverse Top 5, but it came up as spam, so I'm trying again here. Lydia Chalmers' Thesis on William the Bloody is so, so good. I'd never read it before, and am so glad you pointed me in its direction. And in case you haven't read it, I am providing a link to a story written in a similar vein: The Valorous Vampire by Gwyneth Rhys. It's written as a journal article by Lydia about Buffy's relationships with Angel and Spike, and it's highly enjoyable.

Okay, the link should work here, too! Great addition!

Here's a really great newer Lydia story:

Title: Unexpected Assignment
Author: hello_spikey
Rating: PG13 for Spike's usual vocabulary
Characters: Ensemble, plus Lydia Chalmers (Watcher) and minus Giles
Length: One shot
Summary: When Giles resigns his position, the Council sends a replacement who is determined to find out what caused a breech in the warm Slayer/Watcher relationship she'd witnessed in Checkpoint. Unfortunately, everyone seems determined to keep her from her new charge.
